Redefining the Community Library
The North Wilmington Library – Think. Do. The Hub differs from traditional libraries in that it serves as a lively, multi-purpose community center that aims to inspire creativity, learning, and connection. Instead of focusing only on books and quiet study areas, Think. Do. Hub is a dynamic gathering spot that addresses a broad range of community needs. The library offers flexible spaces that can change from storytelling areas to pop-up shops. The building also includes a theater-ready multi-purpose room, a fully equipped recording studio, a demonstration kitchen, a public café, and a hands-on maker space. With custom seat walls shaped like books, a rooftop terrace, and playful features for all ages, the library is intentionally designed to encourage engagement, innovation, and a feeling of belonging for the North Wilmington community.
Building a Hub for All
Spanning 24,000 square feet across two stories, the Think. Do. Hub project encompassed a broad and ambitious scope. The library’s design features a theater-ready, multi-purpose room with a sprung wood floor, a state-of-the-art recording studio, a demonstration kitchen equipped with advanced HVAC isolation, a public café, and a maker space designed for fabrication and hands-on learning. The project also features a rooftop terrace with integrated planters and lighting, custom millwork, acoustic baffles, and robust soundproofing throughout. The exterior showcases a striking blend of metal and wood panels, while the interior is filled with unique finishes and custom architectural elements.
Bringing Vision to Life
The project team took on the challenge of bringing innovative and unique design ideas to life. They utilized advanced BIM modeling to identify and resolve potential clashes before construction commenced, ensuring the smooth integration of complex systems and finishes. The team closely collaborated with the design team to address issues that standard documentation didn’t cover, such as fitting specialized metal panels on doors and constructing curved walls with integrated lighting. Regular design review sessions, constructability assessments, and real-time problem-solving helped the team develop practical solutions for ambitious design features. Their collaborative approach also helped overcome supply chain disruptions and environmental challenges, including the cleanup of a brownfield site and the safe removal of an unmarked buried tank, all while maintaining schedule and quality.
Creating a Destination for Creativity and Learning
The North Wilmington Library boasts a variety of distinctive spaces that make it a true community hub. The versatile, theater-ready multi-purpose room supports performances and large events, while the recording studio offers opportunities for music and podcast creation. The demonstration kitchen hosts culinary classes and events, and the maker space encourages hands-on exploration and craftsmanship. The public café and rooftop terrace provide welcoming environments for socializing and relaxation. Custom millwork, acoustical baffles, and playful design elements create an inviting atmosphere for visitors of all ages. Through close collaboration with stakeholders and a focus on quality, the project team brought these spaces to life, ensuring that the Think. Do. Hub is more than just a library; it’s a vibrant, inclusive space for creativity, learning, and community connection.
